Aptowicz shines a spotlight on the good, the bad and grotesque of 19th century medicine, and on the life of Thomas Dent Mütter, a brilliant surgeon who specialized on performing radical reconstructive surgery on the severely deformed in a time before anesthesia. Author Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz gives an illustrated talk on Thomas Dent Mütter, founder of Philadelphia's (in)famous Mütter Museum and subject of her New York Times best selling book Dr Mütter's Marvels. Harburg put a lot of work into the words of the song, and the opening line went through many revisions. Unwilling to scrap his new song, Arlen sought the opinion of famous lyricist Ira Gershwin, who sped up the tempo enough to appease Harburg. But when he shared it with his lyricist, Harburg hated its slow pace and refused to write lyrics for it. Arlen had worked out the melody while sitting in his car in front of a Hollywood drugstore. Right from its conception the song was met with criticism and conflict. It was her signature song and became the most requested (and demanding) tune throughout her chaotic career. Written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, it’s been covered by countless artists but is forever linked with Judy Garland who sang it in The Wizard of Oz. PCL MS 180 Chelsea Quinn Yarbro Collection Through her reluctant exchanges with Mr Thornton, one of the more honourable (but still in Margaret’s eyes reprehensible), mill owners in Milton, learns gradually to abandon her southern-born prejudices. It is through Margaret’s interaction with both the “Masters” who own the cotton mills and their workers – one of whom is the fiery leader of the workers’ Union who leads a strike – that Gaskell brings to life the industrial town. With a judgement fixed by her idealisation of the south, we see her struggle to adjust to the harsh climate of an industrial town. The narrative focuses on Margaret Hale, a strong-minded but incredibly caring protagonist, who moves from the south of England to the industrial north with her retired clergyman father and sensitive mother. The novel was published in 1854 and is set in “Milton”, a fictional industrial town resembling Manchester. I’m really glad I found this book because, while doing my A Levels, it complimented both my study of Victorian women’s rights in History, and extended my understanding of other Victorian novels I had read. I chose to read Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South book when I was around 16 having really enjoyed the 2004 BBC TV adaptation. There were hints to to the truth, but mostly at the beginning and fairly few. It’s a bit disappointing, especially since we spend most of the book following a different, and ultimately wrong, path. The solution falls into his lap, so to speak. At the risk of slight spoilers (skip this whole paragraph if you want to avoid it), although Grant knows when he is on the wrong track, he doesn’t actually solve the mystery. It’s going to take a lot of good old fashioned detective work for Grant to get to the bottom of this case.Įxcept it doesn’t. The tough part of this, for Inspector Grant, is that no one seems to know who he is and why he might have died. The Man in the Queue covers the murder of a man in a queue (big surprise). I happened to find a copy of The Man in the Queue in a second hand bookstore (before the lockdown) and since it was only $2, I snapped it up. After an enjoyable experience reading A Shilling for Candles, I was on the look out for more Inspector Grant mysteries. But the ability to retain large blocks of text is not a sign of intelligence, and being unable to do so doesn't make you 'dumb.' Intelligence has many cultural and genetic factors and a lot of time it boils down to how you use information, not how well you remember it. The main argument I see in favor of this view is that people used to be able to remember long essays or poems or pieces and recite them easily, as this is what was taught in school. No, I can't see how this can have happened. Dean Burnett is a Cardiff-based neuroscientist and author Image: PrivatĭW: Has Google made people dumber over the years?
